The Standards for Privacy of Individually Identifiable Health Information, released December 2000, requires that healthcare organizations, including providers, plans, and clearinghouses, designate a privacy official who is responsible for the development and implementation of their policies and procedures surrounding privacy issues. AHIMA released a "Sample Position Description" for the HIPAA mandated privacy officer position February 2001at the 2001 Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Conference and Exhibition. The "Sample Position Description" can serve as a template for organizations as they develop privacy officer positions. AHIMA's sample position description is available on the Association's Web site.
Note: AHIMA Website also has great resources and practice briefs on HIPAA issues.
